Evidence labels come first
Every new recommendation article should tell readers what kind of evidence supports it. A research-backed guide is not presented as a hands-on review, and a first look is not presented as a final verdict.
- Hands-on tested: a named author or tester used the product and recorded direct observations.
- Primary-source research: the assessment relies on official documentation and attributable independent evidence, without claiming URBNGEAR tested the product.
- Specification-based: an early or limited assessment based on published specifications.
- First look: preliminary coverage that is not scored or ranked as a definitive recommendation.
How buying guides are built
- Define the reader, use case, decision factors, and disqualifying tradeoffs before selecting products.
- Create a candidate list broad enough to include credible alternatives, not only products with retailer programs.
- Verify specifications against manufacturer pages, manuals, or data sheets.
- Use independent measurements for claims that cannot be established from specifications alone.
- Separate confirmed recommendations from products still awaiting verification.
- Record sources, the fact-check date, material changes, and the basis of every “best” designation.
Hands-on protocols
When a page is labeled hands-on tested, the article should identify the tester, test period, sample source, and category-relevant protocol. Mouse testing, for example, should cover fit, controls, scrolling, connectivity, software, surface tracking, noise, and battery observations. The protocol and duration may vary by category, but the evidence label may not.
Samples, affiliate links, and independence
Articles disclose whether samples were purchased, loaned, gifted, mixed, or not applicable. A manufacturer or retailer does not receive a promised score, placement, or right to approve editorial conclusions. Affiliate eligibility does not determine whether a product is included.

Updates and corrections
Material specification, recommendation, or methodology changes receive an updated date and a plain-language update note. Silent corrections are reserved for spelling, formatting, and other changes that do not alter meaning. See the corrections policy to report an issue.
