You press a key after a few seconds of not typing. Nothing happens.
You press again. Now it works.
It does not feel like normal lag, and it does not feel like a dead key. It feels like the keyboard ignored you once, then remembered how to be a keyboard.
Most of the time, that is exactly what happened.
What is actually happening
The keyboard goes to sleep, then the first key press is used to wake it up instead of sending real input.
That is the whole behavior in plain language.
The keyboard is not usually broken. It is not usually missing input because you typed too lightly or too quickly. It just is not fully connected yet when that first key lands.
That is why the problem has a very specific feel. The first key disappears after a pause. The second one goes through. Then everything feels normal again until the keyboard sits idle long enough to sleep.

Most of the time, this is normal behavior
That is the part people usually do not want to hear.

That first key press is often happening before the wake-up is complete.
So the useful question is not "why is this keyboard lagging?" The useful question is "is this normal sleep behavior, or is it becoming something worse?"

When it is just wake-up behavior
You are probably looking at normal sleep behavior if:
- it only happens after a pause or idle period
- only the first key is missed
- everything works normally immediately after

When it stops being normal
This is where the line changes.

Multi-device keyboards
This is another very real one.
A keyboard that can jump between two or three devices has a little more to sort out when it wakes. Switch the connection type
If you are using Bluetooth, try the 2.4 GHz receiver.

Accept the wake tap if the behavior is minor

Do not jump straight to reinstalling drivers just because the keyboard missed one key after idle. Sometimes the software layer matters, but random driver rituals are not a serious first move here.
