A Bluetooth mouse rarely disconnects in a neat, predictable way.
It may freeze after a few quiet minutes, vanish when the computer wakes from sleep, or begin stuttering only when a dock or external drive is connected. Toggling Bluetooth brings it back, but often just long enough to interrupt you again.
That inconsistency is what makes the problem frustrating. The mouse is easy to blame, yet the same symptoms can come from a weak battery, a damaged pairing record, USB interference, a poorly positioned antenna, an outdated driver, or the way Windows manages power.
This guide focuses on Windows 11 and works from the safest checks toward the more disruptive ones. Menu names can vary slightly between Windows versions, computer manufacturers, and Bluetooth adapters, but the diagnostic logic stays the same.
Charge or replace the battery, bring the mouse close to the computer, temporarily disconnect nearby USB hubs and drives, and restart Bluetooth. If the connection still drops, re-pair the mouse, install the computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver, and investigate power management.
Read the failure pattern before changing settings
First, make sure the mouse is actually using Bluetooth. Many products described as “wireless” communicate through Logitech Bolt, Logitech Unifying, or another proprietary 2.4GHz USB receiver. Some can use either Bluetooth or a receiver, depending on the selected device slot.
Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices and look for the mouse in the Bluetooth list. At the same time, check the computer for a small USB receiver and inspect the mouse for a mode switch marked Bluetooth, 2.4G, Bolt, USB, or 1, 2, and 3.
Troubleshooting a receiver connection as though it were Bluetooth sends you toward the wrong drivers and settings. If the mouse works through its receiver but not through Bluetooth, you have already narrowed the fault to the Bluetooth path. That still leaves several possibilities: the mouse radio or pairing memory, the computer’s adapter and driver, or the surrounding wireless environment.
The timing of the failure is often the best first clue.

Weak batteries and poor battery contact are common, but they are not the only credible causes. Distance, metal obstructions, nearby USB 3.x equipment, missing desktop antennas, corrupted pairing data, multi-device switching, driver changes, Windows power saving, a stuck Bluetooth service, and defective hardware can all produce a similar stop-and-start experience.
Use the pattern to choose a starting point. Changing every Bluetooth and power setting at once makes it harder to learn which fix actually mattered.
1.Rule out battery, switch, and range problems
A mouse can still turn on with a weak battery and yet fail to hold a stable Bluetooth connection. That is why the first useful test is physical rather than technical.
Fully charge the mouse or install known-good replacement batteries. Turn it off, wait about 10 seconds, turn it back on, and test it within roughly one metre of the computer with no obvious metal obstruction between them.
If the mouse uses removable batteries, check that they are seated properly. You can gently inspect accessible contacts for dirt, dust, or corrosion, but do not pour liquid into the mouse, scrape the contacts with an abrasive tool, or open a sealed rechargeable model.
Microsoft’s own Bluetooth guidance begins with the same basics: confirm that the device has power, has sufficient charge, and is within range before moving into driver or system work.
Do not put too much faith in the battery percentage shown by Windows or mouse-management software. It can be an estimate rather than a direct measure of battery health. A worn rechargeable cell or loose contact can interrupt the radio even while the software still reports charge remaining.
Once you have changed the battery condition, use the mouse normally for at least 20 to 30 minutes. If it becomes stable, the old battery or contact was probably the cause. If it remains connected only when it is very close to the computer, move to the antenna and interference check next.
2.Remove interference and check the antenna path
Bluetooth shares the crowded 2.4GHz band with a great deal of everyday equipment. The connection can deteriorate because of distance or a metal case, but it can also be disrupted by devices sitting only a few centimetres away.
Microsoft specifically notes that some unshielded USB devices attached to USB 3.0 ports can interfere with nearby Bluetooth connections. A dock or external SSD does not need to be defective to contribute; its cable, port, or position may simply be creating a noisy radio environment.
Temporarily disconnect nonessential USB hubs, docking stations, external hard drives and SSDs, webcams, USB Wi-Fi adapters, wireless receivers, other Bluetooth accessories, and spare USB 3.x cables. Test the mouse with only the equipment you need to keep the computer running. If the connection settles down, reconnect those devices one at a time until the problem returns.
Desktop computers deserve an extra check. Many motherboards and PCIe wireless cards use the same external antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Confirm that both supplied antennas are attached securely and are not trapped behind the metal case or inside a cabinet. Moving them above or beside the desk can make a substantial difference. Bluetooth may still appear in Windows without those antennas, but its useful range can collapse.
If you use a USB Bluetooth adapter, do not leave it hidden directly behind a large metal tower. A short, properly shielded USB extension cable can move it into a clearer position.
There is no reason to begin by reconfiguring the router. Distance, obstruction, USB equipment, antenna placement, and cable position are safer and more relevant tests.
3.Restart the entire connection, not just the mouse
A temporary failure can live in the mouse, the adapter, its driver, or the active Windows Bluetooth stack. Restarting only one part may leave the same state in place.
Turn the mouse off, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, switch Bluetooth off, and wait about 10 seconds. Then use Start → Power → Restart. When Windows returns, enable Bluetooth and turn the mouse back on.
Use Restart for this test rather than only shutting down and powering on again. Depending on the computer’s configuration, a restart can reset the active driver state more completely than a normal shutdown cycle.
The way the problem returns matters. A permanent recovery points to a temporary software or adapter state. A mouse that works until the next sleep cycle points more strongly toward power management, firmware, or wake behavior. If Bluetooth needs to be toggled repeatedly, pairing, drivers, and the Bluetooth Support Service become more relevant.
4.Remove the pairing record and start fresh
Windows keeps a pairing record for every Bluetooth device. When that record becomes inconsistent, a mouse can disconnect repeatedly, refuse to reconnect after a restart, or keep asking to be paired again.
Before removing it, look for a device-channel button on the mouse. It may be labelled 1, 2, or 3, Easy-Switch, Bluetooth, or with a small computer icon. A multi-device mouse can quietly jump to another saved computer, so temporarily turn Bluetooth off on other computers or tablets associated with that slot.
To rebuild the pairing:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices.
- Find the mouse, open its three-dot menu, and choose Remove device.
- Put the mouse into pairing mode using the manufacturer’s documented procedure.
- Select Add device → Bluetooth and choose the mouse when it appears.
If the mouse supports several saved devices, try an unused slot rather than immediately reusing the old one. Stability on the new slot suggests that the previous pairing record or multi-device switching behavior contributed.
Restart Windows once more after pairing. A successful repair should reconnect automatically without another pairing cycle.
5.Use Windows diagnostics, updates, and optional drivers
Windows includes automated checks that can identify some service, configuration, and driver problems without asking you to change settings by hand.
Open Get Help from Start, search for Bluetooth troubleshooter, and follow the prompts. Some Windows 11 builds also expose the same route under Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters, where Bluetooth appears with a Run button.
Next, open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install applicable cumulative and security updates, and restart. Then check Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates for Bluetooth, wireless, chipset, system-firmware, or manufacturer-specific packages. Optional drivers are not always installed automatically.
Before installing driver-related updates, record the Windows version and build number, recent update history, Bluetooth-adapter name, and the driver provider, date, and version. That small record is useful if the connection becomes worse and you need to identify exactly what changed.
6.Install the Bluetooth driver made for the computer
The mouse depends on the computer’s Bluetooth radio, not just the mouse entry shown in Device Manager. An old, corrupted, incompatible, or overly generic adapter driver can cause poor range, repeated drops, and failed reconnection after sleep.
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Bluetooth. Look for the radio or adapter—often identified by Intel, Realtek, MediaTek, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Bluetooth Adapter, or Wireless Bluetooth. Do not choose only the mouse when the goal is to update the computer’s radio.
Open the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version. You can try Update driver → Search automatically for drivers, but “the best drivers are already installed” only means Windows did not find another suitable package through that route.
For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, the better source is usually the computer manufacturer’s official support page. Search with the exact model, serial number, or service identifier; select the correct Windows version; install its Bluetooth package; and restart.
An OEM driver can include system-specific changes for the wireless card, antennas, firmware, and power behavior. A generic Intel, Realtek, or MediaTek package is not automatically better because its version number is higher.
Avoid driver-aggregation sites, file-sharing pages, unofficial mirrors, pop-up “driver scan” utilities, and automated driver-updater applications. Use Windows Update or the official computer, motherboard, or Bluetooth-adapter manufacturer.
7.Roll back a bad update or reinstall a damaged driver
The right action depends on when the problem began. An update makes sense when the installed driver is old or incompatible; a rollback makes more sense when the mouse was reliable until a recent Windows or Bluetooth-driver update.
To roll back: open the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager, choose Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, follow the prompts, and restart. If the button is unavailable, Windows may not have retained the previous package. Timing alone does not prove that an update caused the disconnections, but a successful rollback is meaningful evidence.
To reinstall: download the intended replacement driver from the computer manufacturer first and save it locally. Then open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter, choose Uninstall device, and restart Windows. The adapter will normally reinstall automatically.
If it does not return, use Action → Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager and install the official package you saved.
Do not delete arbitrary DriverStore files or run an unverified script to “clean” Bluetooth drivers. Those actions go far beyond the controlled reinstall this diagnosis requires.
8.Test power management only when the timing fits
Power management is most relevant when the mouse drops after inactivity, while the laptop is on battery, or immediately after waking from sleep. It is not a universal Bluetooth fix.
Start by noting whether the problem occurs on battery power, AC power, or both. Temporarily disable Energy Saver, leave the computer idle for the same interval that normally triggers the failure, and test again. Restore the original setting afterward unless the change clearly helps and you accept the reduction in battery life.
You can also open the Bluetooth adapter’s Properties in Device Manager and look for a Power Management tab. If it exists, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, restart, and repeat the same idle or sleep test.
Not every adapter exposes that tab, and its absence does not mean the driver is broken. Preventing the adapter from powering down may also consume more battery, so restore the checkbox if it makes no difference.
Microsoft strongly recommends keeping it on. Disabling it across the whole computer is a broad, poorly targeted response to most Bluetooth-mouse problems and can increase power use. Consider a controlled test only when a manufacturer or qualified support engineer recommends it for a specific USB Bluetooth adapter.
9.Restart the Bluetooth Support Service
Windows uses background services for Bluetooth discovery and communication. If the connection comes back after Bluetooth is toggled or Windows is restarted, the Bluetooth Support Service is worth a controlled restart.
Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and select OK. Find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, choose Restart, and test the mouse again.
Microsoft includes this step in its guidance for repeated Bluetooth disconnections. A temporary recovery suggests that the Windows Bluetooth stack, adapter, or driver may be getting stuck; it does not prove that the service itself is permanently misconfigured.
Keep the test reversible. Do not change several Bluetooth services together, force unfamiliar startup modes, delete Bluetooth registry entries, or run a service-reset script from a forum.
10.Separate a mouse fault from a computer fault
If the first nine fixes have not held, stop changing Windows at random. The next useful move is to make the failure follow one component.
Pair the mouse with a second computer and use it long enough to pass the normal failure interval. A mouse that disconnects from both systems becomes the stronger suspect. Battery wear, damaged contacts, a faulty power switch, radio failure, firmware trouble, multi-device switching, and internal damage all remain possible.
Then reverse the test: connect another Bluetooth mouse to the original computer. If both mice disconnect there, focus on the adapter, driver, antenna, chipset, BIOS or firmware, power management, nearby USB equipment, or docking station.
These cross-checks are more informative than another round of settings changes.
If the problem remains, use the surrounding hardware as evidence
The mouse and computer tests tell you where the fault is leaning. A few surrounding symptoms can narrow it further.

When testing an external Bluetooth adapter, do not leave two active adapters running without knowing which one Windows is using. The purpose is to isolate the internal path, not create a second ambiguous connection.
Keep the troubleshooting narrower than the problem
Bluetooth advice online often escalates much faster than the evidence justifies. A single disconnecting mouse is not a good reason to rewrite registry settings, disable security features, or reset Windows.
Avoid third-party driver updaters, unofficial drivers, random registry edits, unverified PowerShell or batch scripts, and manual deletion of DriverStore files. Do not disable USB selective suspend or Wi-Fi across the whole system, change several power options or Bluetooth services at once, or uninstall a Windows update without identifying it.
The same restraint applies to hardware. Do not flash a BIOS using instructions for another computer model, factory-reset Windows as an early fix, replace the mouse before testing it elsewhere, or open a sealed rechargeable mouse.
Broad changes can create a second problem and erase the diagnostic value of the first one.
Firmware and manufacturer support are later steps
A BIOS, system-firmware, or mouse-firmware update becomes reasonable when the manufacturer documents a Bluetooth fix, the failure consistently follows sleep, Bluetooth disappears after wake, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth fail together, or the manufacturer recommends a specific package for the exact model.
Confirm the computer model, use the official support page, connect AC power, save your work, make sure the BitLocker recovery key is available, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely. An interrupted or incorrect BIOS update can leave the computer unable to start.
Manufacturer support is the better next step when the mouse fails on several computers, multiple Bluetooth devices fail on one computer, Bluetooth disappears from Device Manager, the adapter reports an error code, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drop together, or the trouble began after an OEM firmware update. The same applies when the mouse needs pairing after every restart, an official driver reinstall did not help, or you are considering a BIOS update.
Contact the mouse manufacturer promptly if a rechargeable battery is swollen, damaged, or unusually hot.
When you contact support, provide the computer manufacturer and exact model; Windows edition, version, and build; Bluetooth-adapter model and driver details; mouse manufacturer, model, and connection mode; battery type and charge; and whether the failure follows sleep, battery power, AC power, or another Bluetooth device. Include connected docks, hubs, and USB devices along with the troubleshooting already completed.
That symptom history is much more useful than saying only that Bluetooth is broken.
