The best standing-desk habit is not standing for as long as possible.
It is changing position before one posture starts to feel like work.
That distinction matters because a standing desk can solve one problem and create another. You may buy one to escape an afternoon of sitting, then spend the next week standing rigidly until your feet, lower back, and shoulders are just as tired. The desk is not necessarily defective. You may simply be using it as an all-day standing station.
Research supports reducing uninterrupted sitting and changing posture. It does not establish that standing all day is healthier than sitting all day, or that one exact sit/stand ratio works for every body.
The practical goal is simpler: sit comfortably, stand briefly, and move regularly.

A standing desk is a posture-changing desk
Prolonged sitting can be uncomfortable, but prolonged static standing is not a free upgrade. NIOSH's review of standing work links long periods of standing with fatigue, lower-back discomfort, leg symptoms, and swelling. Its most consistent practical recommendation is dynamic movement: walking, shifting posture, or alternating among sitting, standing, and leaning.
That is why the desk should make several positions easy rather than encouraging you to prove how many hours you can remain upright.
Standing still is still static work. It may feel different from sitting, but your legs and lower back are still supporting the same position without much relief. A short walk to refill water can be more useful than adding another 20 minutes to a standing timer.
How long should you stand?
There is no universally correct interval. Recommendations in occupational-ergonomics guidance range from very short changes to 20-, 30-, 45-, or 60-minute cycles. Research on sit-stand desks shows that they can reduce workplace sitting, but it does not identify one perfect schedule or prove that standing for a specific number of hours produces better health outcomes.
For a beginner, 10 to 20 minutes is a reasonable starting range. That is practical guidance, not a scientifically proven limit. Try this instead:

- Add a real movement break—a short walk, water refill, or change of room—rather than switching from sitting still to standing still.
- Extend a standing bout only when the shorter version feels easy.
If you feel uncomfortable after five or ten minutes, do not treat that as a failure of willpower. Check the desk height, screen position, floor, footwear, and amount of movement first.
What about the 20-8-2 rule?
The 20-8-2 pattern—20 minutes sitting, 8 minutes standing, and 2 minutes moving—is a useful rule of thumb because it reminds people to change position. It is not an established medical dosage, and the wider evidence has not shown that those exact numbers are uniquely optimal.
Use it as a prompt if it helps you move. Change the numbers if your body or your workday requires it.
Set the desk from your elbows, not your height
Standing desk height charts can give you a starting estimate, but your elbows are the better reference.
Stand naturally with your shoulders relaxed. Keep your upper arms close to your sides and bend your elbows to roughly a right angle. The keyboard and mouse should sit around that level, allowing your forearms to stay approximately horizontal and your wrists to remain close to neutral.
Signs the desk is too high include:
- shoulders that rise or shrug while typing;
- wrists bent upward;
- elbows pushed away from your sides.
Signs it is too low include:
- leaning forward to reach the keyboard;
- shoulders rolling toward the screen;
- wrists bending downward;
- a tendency to rest your weight on the desk.
The surface height is not the whole story. A thick keyboard raises your hands. A large desk edge can change where your wrists rest. Shoes alter your standing height. Set the actual keyboard and mouse position, then make small adjustments until your shoulders can stay relaxed.

Your monitor may need to move too
Correct keyboard height does not guarantee correct screen height. When the work surface rises, the monitor may become too low. If you raise the monitor with the desk, it may be correct while standing but too high when you sit again.
Adjust the screen independently when possible. Use these checks as starting points:
- keep the top region of the display around eye level or slightly below;
- aim your normal viewing direction horizontally or slightly downward;
- start at roughly arm's length, then adjust for text size and comfort;
- keep the main screen directly in front of you.
CCOHS gives a broad viewing-distance reference of about 40–74 cm, while OSHA commonly uses around 50 cm as a general starting point. These are not precision targets. If text looks small, increase the text size before pulling the screen uncomfortably close.

Match the symptom to the likely fix
Buying accessories before identifying the symptom is how a small workspace becomes crowded without becoming more comfortable.
Tired feet or legs
Reduce the duration of each standing bout first. Then look at the floor and your footwear. Hard tile or concrete can make standing feel much more demanding, particularly if you stand rigidly in one spot.
An anti-fatigue mat may help on an unforgiving floor, but it cannot compensate for excessive standing or a desk that is too high. Choose moderate resilience, a non-slip base, beveled edges, and enough usable area to vary your stance. Avoid extremely soft mats that make you feel unstable.
Lower-back discomfort
Long, static standing is the first suspect. So is leaning forward because the screen is too far away or the desk is too low. Shorten the standing bouts, shift your weight, and check whether the screen and keyboard let you stay upright without bracing on the desk.
Shoulder or neck fatigue
The keyboard may be too high, or the monitor may be too low or too high. The mouse may also be farther away than it appears, forcing your arm outward for hours. Bring it beside the keyboard and lower the work surface until your shoulders can drop.
Wrist discomfort
Check the keyboard height and angle. A standing desk that places the keyboard above elbow height can create the same wrist problem as a fixed desk that is too high. A keyboard tray may help if the desktop cannot go low enough, but make sure it is wide enough for both the keyboard and mouse.

Day 1: Stand for one short task each hour. Notice when discomfort begins.

Days 4–7: Extend only the bouts that still feel comfortable. Keep sitting and walking in the routine rather than turning every break into standing time.

Seek professional medical advice for severe or persistent back pain, new weakness or numbness, difficulty walking or balancing, bowel or bladder changes, fever with back pain, or pain after significant trauma.
