Bias lighting is the soft glow behind your monitor that illuminates the wall behind the screen. It is one of the most frequently recommended ergonomic upgrades for desk setups, and it is one of the most misunderstood.
When done correctly, bias lighting reduces eye strain by lowering the brightness contrast between the screen and the surrounding wall. When done incorrectly — wrong colour temperature, wrong brightness, wrong placement — it does nothing useful and can make things worse.

What bias lighting actually does
The core function of bias lighting is contrast reduction.
When you look at a bright screen in a dark room, your eyes constantly adjust between the bright display and the dark wall behind it. This constant adjustment causes fatigue over time. Bias lighting raises the brightness of the wall behind the screen, reducing the contrast ratio between the display and the background.
The effect is similar to how a backlit clock face is easier to read in a dark room than a non-illuminated one. The surrounding light makes the display easier to look at, not because the display is brighter, but because the contrast is lower.
This is backed by research from the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which found that ambient light behind a display reduces pupil dilation and visual fatigue compared to viewing the same display in a dark room.
When bias lighting helps
Bias lighting is most effective in these situations:
Working in a dark or dimly lit room. If the only significant light source is the screen, bias lighting reduces the harsh contrast between the display and the surrounding darkness.
Long reading sessions on the screen. Hours of text-heavy work — writing, coding, reading — benefit most from reduced contrast because the eyes are focused on a single bright area for extended periods.
Evening work after sunset. When ambient room light is low and the screen is the brightest object in the room, bias lighting bridges the gap.

When bias lighting does not help
Bias lighting is less effective or unnecessary when:
The room already has good ambient lighting. If the room is well-lit with ceiling lights, floor lamps, or natural light, the contrast between the screen and the wall is already low. Adding bias lighting on top of that provides minimal additional benefit.
The monitor is in front of a window. Natural light from a window dominates any bias lighting. The window provides far more ambient light than an LED strip, making bias lighting redundant.
The wall behind the monitor is very close. If the monitor is pushed against a wall with less than 15cm of space, the bias light creates a bright hot spot on the wall rather than a soft glow. The effect is glare, not contrast reduction.
The bias light is too bright. If the LED strip is brighter than the screen's ambient brightness, it creates a new contrast problem instead of solving the original one.
How to set it up correctly
Colour temperature
The colour temperature of the bias light should match or be slightly warmer than the monitor's white point. Most monitors default to 6500K (D65 daylight). A bias light at 6500K matches the screen. A bias light at 5000K to 6500K is acceptable. A bias light at 2700K to 3000K (warm white) creates a visible colour mismatch that can feel distracting.
Brightness
The bias light should be dim enough that you notice it when you look directly at the wall behind the monitor, but bright enough that it reduces the contrast between the screen and the wall. A good starting point is 10 to 30 percent of the screen's peak brightness at the wall surface.
If the bias light is so bright that it washes out the screen or creates a visible glow on the screen surface, it is too bright.
Placement
The LED strip should be mounted on the back of the monitor, not on the wall. This ensures the light is directed outward from behind the screen toward the wall, creating an even glow rather than a visible light source.
Mount the strip horizontally across the centre of the monitor back, or vertically along the left and right edges. Avoid placing it along the bottom edge, where it can create a visible glow on the desk surface.
Length
The LED strip should cover roughly 60 to 80 percent of the monitor's width. A strip that is too short creates an uneven glow. A strip that extends beyond the monitor edges creates visible light spill.

- Even light distribution: Cheap strips have visible LED hotspots. Better strips use diffusers or denser LED spacing

The common mistakes
Placing the strip on the wall instead of the monitor. This creates a visible light source rather than a soft glow. The light should come from behind the screen, not from the wall.
Using RGB colour modes. Coloured bias lighting (blue, red, purple) looks dramatic but does not reduce contrast effectively. White light at the correct colour temperature is what works.
Setting it to maximum brightness. A bias light that is too bright creates a new contrast problem. Start dim and increase until the screen feels comfortable.
Ignoring the room lighting. Bias lighting works best as a supplement to ambient room lighting, not a replacement. If the room is completely dark, bias lighting alone is not enough.
